There are new laws that parents in New York State should know about car seats for 2026 and beyond. There is legislation at the Federal level that will have an impact on families in the Empire State soon.

New Car Seat Laws For 2026

I have four kids under 9 years old, and we use car seats every day. This discussion certainly has my attention, as we will be using them for a few more years for our kids. According to reports, as of December 2026, there are some new laws. "New FMVSS 213a car seat regulations take effect December 5, 2026, requiring side-impact testing for enhanced child safety".

These new laws will also apply to booster seats. ABC News reports that: ""NHTSA's new standard ensures that child seats can restrain the child, prevent harmful head contact with a vehicle door or seat structure and reduce crash forces to the chest".

The good news is, as long as your current seat(s) are not expired, you are good to go and don't need to get a new one just yet.

I have been a dad for a little over 9 years, and we have gone through a variety of car seats. The best one that we have found is the Doona! It is pricey, but if you are registering for a baby shower, it is a good one to jot down. The Doona makes life much easier and eliminates the need for a stroller.
