52 Storefronts Are Accused Of Illegally Selling Marijuana In NY

The Office of Cannabis Management recently identified fifty-two illicit cannabis stores in the state. Each of the vendors was sent cease and desist letters, requiring that they stop selling marijuana without a proper dispensary license. Damian Fagon, Chief Equity Officer at the Office of Cannabis Management said,

New York is building the most equitable cannabis industry in the nation, one that prioritizes those communities most harmed under cannabis prohibition. Stores selling unregulated cannabis products without licenses undercut those efforts. Plain and simple. Illicit stores don’t contribute to our communities, they don’t support our public schools and they don’t protect consumers. That’s why we’re working with partners across government to investigate these operations and hold them accountable.

The state aims to collect as much tax revenue from the legal adult-use sale of marijuana as it can. Revenue from the licenses will pay for the management of the program and the law. After those costs are covered, the remaining tax revenue will be divided to support the following:

- 40 Percent to the State Lottery Fund
- 40 Percent to Community Grants Reinvestment Fund
- 20 Percent to Drug Treatment and Public Education Fund
