Hey, it's Yasmin Young and I'm teaming up with Hennessy to highlight black-owned businesses right here in Buffalo and Western New York as part of the WBLK Sable Series sponsored by Hennessy. For this edition, I talked to Steve Rice, manager of Solo Eats, who WBLK listeners absolutely love winning free gas from on Thursdays. Check out our conversation below:

For folks who are not familiar with Solo Eats — I know you have gas but you guys are also the original home of the deep fried taco — talk to me about what you offer.

The deep fried taco is such a great product. It's a regular taco that comes with lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, and sauce, and we batter and fry it. It's probably our number one seller right now. We have beef, steak, chicken, shrimp, fish, and then there's the Solo Banger taco. It comes with chicken, steak, and beef sausage, and it's a wonderful product.

Where did that idea come from?

Tony, who is our owner, he comes up with great ideas for our menu items and somehow he came up with this item. At the very beginning, I was wondering, "Uh, maybe, maybe not." But it took off and it took off like rocket fire.

Talk about what else you offer on your menu.

We have probably the best fish fry and fish dinner in the city. Our fish dinners come with two sides and a dinner roll. We've got sides that go from potato salad, baked macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, french fries, seasoned fries, hush puppies. Those fish dinners are flying out of the door and they come at a great price. We also have the greatest steak, chicken, and sausage hoagies, chopped burgers, cheeseburger subs, wings and country fried wings, fisher whoppers. You've gotta come in!

You offer gas as well. Tell me about that.

We offer the gas card through our partnership with WBLK and right across the street from us is Mandela, so you can use your gas card right there. We're located on the southwest corner of Jefferson and east Ferry.

How can people place an order with you guys?

You can give us a call at 716-886-7656 or 886-SOLO. We're also on GrubHub and Postmates.
