Health Code Violations In Chautauqua County

Each month Chautauqua County sends health code inspectors out to restaurants and other spots with food preparation. These inspectors have the job of trying to keep us safe. They thoroughly review each restaurant's operations to ensure they are not violating any health codes. Health code inspectors report on violations such as "Food contact surfaces not washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any time of operations when contamination may have occurred," and critical violations like "Critical Violation [RED] Water/ice: unsafe, unapproved sources, cross connections."

Did you get any restaurant gift cards for the holidays? If so, you certainly want to look at the list of restaurants that passed their health inspections (below). If the restaurant you received as a gift, you may want to try to trade it in or sell it. Many people do not pay attention to how restaurants, fast food spots, and even churches or other organizations prepare their food. We often take for granted that they are looking out for our health. But, let's be real, some restaurants hire high school students or people who aren't paid enough to care. There were 21 restaurants in Chautauqua County that did not pass their health inspections in November.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that around 48 million Americans get sick from foodborne illnesses each year. Of those, 128,000 end up in the hospital, and 3,000 die. In 2019, for example, the CDC said seven major pathogens caused the most harm. They include Campylobacter spp., Clostridium perfringens, invasive Listeria monocytogenes, norovirus, Salmonella (nontyphoidal), Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, and Toxoplasma gondii.
