When the warm weather exits the region and the people of Western New York look back on 2025, it will be said far and wide that this was one of the best summers we've seen in Buffalo in a very long time. From food and sports to family and fun, this year has given us a whole lot of great things to do.

One of those things that has happened every summer for the past 21 years is the Buffalo Funk Fest.

The Funk Fest is a three-day music and cultural festival that celebrates love, life, liberation, and music in Buffalo and is given annually to honor the legacy of Rick James.

The Buffalo Funk Fest Was Full Of Fun, Family, And The Music Of Rick James

James Ambrose Johnson, Jr., who is popularly known as Rick James, is credited with popularizing the music genre Punk Funk, which combines the best parts of punk rock, disco, and funk music, which exploded during the 1970s and 1980s.

The Buffalo Funk Festival roots were born back in 2004 when more than 6,000 people attended Rick James' funeral at St. John Baptist Church on Goodell Street. When the funeral was done, a large crowd of people gathered at the historic Buffalo church, singing James' lyrics. As cars drove around blasting his music, people started to dance in the streets, celebrating the life of Rick.

In the more than two decades that have passed, the Buffalo Funk Fest has grown into an event that people travel to attend from far and wide.

This year's festival occurred from Friday, August 22, 2025, to Sunday, August 24, 2025, and culminated in an All White Tribute to Rick James and Frankie Beverly, who recently passed away.

Thousands of people gathered in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and enjoyed all that Western New York has to offer on a beautiful summer day in one of Buffalo's premier parks.
