The last 10 months or so have brought a lot of change to the United States of America.

Every time a new President takes office, you can often expect to see some adjustments in federal policy as the Chief Executive of the nation usually has their own goals and priorities for the nation. However, since 2025 has rolled around, we’ve seen some significant changes in the way America is positioned and what the government cares about.

If you listened to the policy platform of the current party in control of the legislative and executive branches, you would think they were extremely pro-police. However, a recent move from the federal government would cause you to question whether that is true.

Federal Government Cuts Millions From New York Police Agencies

The Federal Department of Homeland Security has cut more than $180 million in funding from police agencies across New York State. According to the New York Times, the portion of those funds that were going to New York City represents more than 80% of the NYPD’s antiterrorism budget.

Police departments from Long Island to Buffalo will all lose a large chunk of cash, which will impact their ability to fight crime and terrorism, which was a key part of President Trump’s 2025 agenda.

A Republican administration literally defunding the police is the height of hypocrisy — and walking away from the fight against terrorism in the number one terrorist target in America is utterly shocking. Any New York House Republican who doesn’t immediately act to get this funding restored is complicit in making their constituents less safe.

In addition to antiterrorism funding, Police and Fire Departments across New York are losing funding, including at least 12 local-level bomb squads, New York’s Joint Task Force Empire Shield, and more are being cut.

While a federal judge has temporarily blocked the funding cut, there seems to be a long road ahead for New York police departments to get the funds they need to keep us safe.
