Extreme Cold Forces Schools To Close All Over Western New York
Officials all over New York State have been ringing the alarm about the polar vortex that is causing arctic air to blow deep into North America, bringing with it extremely frigid temperatures it. Those below-freezing temps, coupled with some high winds, are set to create some potentially dangerous weather conditions all over the Empire State. Things are expected to be so bad that school officials all over the state are starting to make the call to shut down schools and keep kids home on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
As more information is made available about the weather patterns that are impacting Western and Central New York, these decisions are proving to be a good idea. With the amount of Lake Effect Snow that is expected to fall, coupled with the below zero wind-chills that are upon us, it would make kids travel into class treacherous at best. Considering that hypothermia and frostbite can set in after just a few minutes of exposure, many are in agreement that the thing we can do as a community is to stay inside and keep warm until conditions improve.

Schools in Buffalo and all over Western New York are officially closing their doors on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Thanks to a State of Emergency Declaration issued by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, districts are canceling classes fully and allowing all students and staff to stay home. In addition, New York State Regents Exams that were scheduled for this week are postponed until further notice.
School districts across Western and Central New York are in agreement; from the Buffalo Public Schools to Hamburg and beyond, these school closures will be official snow days and not remote learning days.
