New Yorkers Will Get More Social Security Payments In May
New Yorkers who receive Supplemental Security Income will get double their benefits in May. According to Smart Asset,
"In 2022, more than 3.7 million New York State residents received payments from Social Security’s main Old Age, Survivors and Disabilities Insurance (OASDI) program, including 2.7 million retired workers, 122,422 spouses and 44,582 children."
American workers pay into the Social Security program, which they then receive as benefits if they are 62, between 66 and 67, or age 70. Given that groceries will not decrease and the prices of everything else are going up, the average benefit of $1,869.77 per month (as of June 2024) does not seem to be that great.

Here's Why New Yorkers Will Get SSI Twice In May
While there have been job cuts to the Social Security administration, office closings, and new verification requirements, New Yorkers will get paid twice next month. According to Money.com, it is because of the way Social Security cuts checks. SSI checks are issued on the first of each month unless the first falls on a weekend or federal holiday. In that case, the checks go out on the previous business day, which in this case will be May 30, 2025. Because of this timing, there will be two SSI checks sent out in May, but none will be sent out in June.
There is bad news for some New Yorkers when it comes to their SSI checks.
