Now that we know what Crystal Peoples-Stokes planned to discuss at her big press conference on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the primary question people are asking is who is poised to take her place in the New York State Assembly. After more than 30 years of elected office, with more than 20 of them in the New York State Legislature, Peoples-Stokes is officially going to call it quits as she publicly announced that she is going to retire from the State Assembly and not run for reelection this year.

While surrounded by family, Peoples-Stokes talked about her desire to help the community she was from and looked for ways to improve the environment, not just on the east side, but all around Buffalo.

Over her career, Peoples-Stokes was able to become the 2nd most powerful person in the Assembly as the Majority Leader, and that power allowed her to advocate for Buffalo in ways the region has never seen. Now, with her retirement at the end of the year, there are two concerns that people around Buffalo should have:

  1. Who's going to represent Buffalo in 2027, and
  2. How will Buffalo deal with the loss of influence that is sure to come when a new freshman Assembly member takes office next year?

The easier question seems to be who the replacement will be. Multiple local sources, including the Buffalo News and WIVB-TV, believe that the local Democratic Committee will select current Buffalo Common Council Majority Leader Leah Halton-Pope to run in the primary later this year.

With the deadline to submit nominating petitions set for this Friday, April 10, 2026, it's highly unlikely that any one candidate would be able to gather enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. That means the Democratic Committee will be able to select a candidate instead of one bubbling up from the grassroots.

While Halton-Pope is the odds-on favorite, there are others in Buffalo who may also be considered quality candidates.

We're going to have to wait and see what happens, but one thing is for sure: Peoples-Stokes has dedicated a lifetime advocating for Buffalo, and she's earned her retirement.
