Here’s Where COVID-19 Is Spreading At Alarming Rates in New York State
Could some New Yorkers see COVID-19 restrictions or even shutdowns soon? Some areas of New York State are experiencing alarming increases in their COVID-19 positivity rates. The crazy thing is, New York City, the most populated city in the state and country, is not one of them. Somehow, the place with the most people and most potential for recurring spread, has managed to do what less densely-populated areas can't. New York City's 7-day average COVID-19 positivity rate as of Saturday, November 20, 2021, is 1.60 percent. The statewide average is 3.77 percent.
According to New York Governor Kathy Hochul's daily report released Sunday, November 21, these regions have the highest 7-day averages (all of them are above than 5 percent).
7. Southern Tier - 5.03%
6. Central New York - 6.70%
5. Capital Region - 6.83%
4. North Country - 7.13%
3. Mohawk Valley - 7.37%
2. Finger Lakes - 8.58%
1. Western New York - 9.65%
Across the state, 31 people lost their battle with the deadly virus on Nov. 20, bringing the state's death toll from COVID-19 up to 46,221.
Gov. Hochul encouraged New Yorkers to get vaccinated,
"With the colder months and holiday travel season quickly approaching, we know how to prevent the spread of this deadly virus in our communities. Get the vaccine if you have not already, get the booster shot to add another layer of defense, get tested before gathering with others, and stay home if you feel sick. This is no time to let our guard down."
