While Buffalo's newest mayor, Christopher P. Scanlon, has been in office for just about a month, taking over the City of Buffalo when former Mayor Byron Brown resigned to take over Western Regional OTB in October, the new Acting Mayor held a public ceremony to reaffirm the oath of office he took in front of several hundred people.

The public oath-taking was an opportunity to reintroduce Scanlon, who represented the city's South District in the Buffalo Common Council, to the citizens of Buffalo.

I pledge that my administration will leave no stone unturned to maximize our service delivery while minimizing the impact on taxpayers. I believe that together we can and we will overcome any obstacles we face with collaborative solutions to make our city a place where our younger generations want to work and raise a family.
-Christopher Scanlon, Acting Mayor of Buffalo

Scanlon will hold the office of Mayor for just over 14 months before a new mayor is sworn in starting in 2026. There will be a mayoral election in 2025 where someone will be elected to a full term as mayor. Scanlon, who has said he plans to run for a full term next fall, may be running against several others who have expressed interest in holding the office.

Scanlon has some big shoes to fill as acting mayor. Not only those of Byron Brown, whose 5 terms made him Buffalo's longest-serving mayor, but several famous people have been Mayor of Buffalo. Among those are former US President Grover Cleveland and William Fargo, the founder of American Express and Wells Fargo.
