Byron Brown Resigns As Buffalo Mayor And Takes New Job
A decision that has been weeks in the making has finally been made, and now the residents of the city of Buffalo are left to deal with the aftermath.
In a press conference held in his office in Buffalo City Hall, Mayor Byron Brown announced that he had accepted the position of President and CEO of the Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation, a New York State public benefit corporation, and will officially resign as Buffalo's mayor in the coming weeks. In the press conference, Mayor Brown did not give a firm date for his departure, stating there are several things he needs to take care of in Buffalo's government before leaving office.
Brown also said that he does not have a firm start date with WROTBC, but that should also happen within the next few weeks. Brown, who has been in office for nearly 20 years, stated that some members of his mayoral administration will also leave city government and join him in working at WROTBC.
Brown stated that it was the right time for him to leave office, and he consulted with his family and other important people before making the decision.
What Happens Now That Byron Brown Is Resigning?
Now that Brown has accepted his new position and announced his resignation from office, Christopher Scanlon, the president of the Common Council, will become acting mayor of the city. This is laid out in the City of Buffalo Charter, the legal document that governs the city's operations.
Scanlon, who was present at the press conference, said he has already started taking steps to prepare to lead the city for the next 15 months.
There will be a mayoral election in 2025, and the number of people who have expressed interest in the position is steadily growing.
