According to Sports Illustrated, athletic store owner Norm Charney, who lived in Dallas, was the Godfather of selling jerseys. In 1981, he purchased Athletic Supply, which provided jerseys to the Dallas Cowboys. He began selling jerseys without the permission of the NFL. He got a visit from two NFL representatives who told him he couldn't sell the jerseys. Rather than take no for an answer, he set out to get official permission.

Charney went to New York, met with the league and was granted a license to sell authentic merchandise. By 1985, he was selling authentic NFL game jerseys—'tens of thousands of them,' he says—through his NFL Pro Shop catalog.
