Asteroid Heading Toward Earth The Day Before Election Day

What is faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to reach earth just before Election Day? Well if you're thinking Superman, you're off base.

A global pandemic, civil unrest and a US election, now have a near-Earth encounter with an asteroid on the day before election day, according to NASA and CNN.

The asteroid known as 2018VP1 is scheduled to come close to Earth on November 2, according to the Center for Near-Earth Objects Studies at NASA but just how close is the question.

Scientists have only had about 12 days to observe the asteroid since it's disappearance in November 2018 and it is difficult to predict anything with 100% certainty.

Astronomists were able to give a calculated estimate on approximately when and where Asteroid 2018 VP1 will encounter Earth’s orbit again and if it will in fact impact the planet.

NASA says there are three potential impacts, but "based on 21 observations spanning 12.968 days," the agency has determined the asteroid probably won't have a deep impact, let alone bring anything close to Armageddon (remember the movie).

The asteroid, according to the latest calculations has a .41% chance of hitting Earth. That means there is a 1 in 240 chance that it will make an impact or a 99.95% chance that it will miss Earth.
