Even though a new year often brings a "new you," some people will never change their ways. As someone who is an avid consumer of all things true crime, I do understand the difficulties people face in moving from a life of crime into a law-abiding citizen. People face so many challenges, including mental health, drugs, family issues, and of course plain old greed. I tend to watch 'Lock Up' frequently (I am the person who watches reruns like they are new). Many times, the people in the episode have a history of going to prison. They will often say, "I will not be back." And guess what? They usually do.

There are so many factors that go into stopping people from repeating the cycle of committing crimes and ending up back in prison. Things like jobs, counseling, housing, drug treatment, social opportunities, and even religion can help people avoid going back to jail. But, sometimes, people have to hit rock bottom before anyone can help them. Let's be real - if the threat of punishment was enough to stop people from doing bad things, crime would never be an issue.

You may not know this, but New York State has joined Reentry 2030. On July 15, 2024, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision announced that it was a part of the national initiative to "improve reentry outcomes for all formerly incarcerated individuals." This program is being led by the Council of State Governments Justice Center.

I often see a lot of people in the comments saying things like, "Oh, they are criminals, lock them up and throw away the key." To some extent, I understand. If you have been a victim of crime, it is hard to have empathy. I do believe that some people would be locked up for eternity for the benefit of society. Some folks are beyond rehabilitation.

But, there are many people who are not as far gone. These people are at a crossroads. They can be given a second chance (after they pay their debt to society) or they can be denied hope for an honest life and just become a better criminal in prison. Hopefully, some, if not most of the people below will take whatever situation that got them arrested and use it as a catalyst to better themselves.

Each of the people listed below is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
