38 People Were Arrested In Niagara County This Week

These 38 individuals were arrested in Niagara County over the past week for a variety of offenses. The safety of our community is so important. We need to make sure that our kids, elderly, and working people can feel safe. As prices continue to rise and if the job market shrinks, more people may turn to a life of crime. Some people may just be down on their luck, but still, there are lots of resources for those people within New York.

I watch the show Lock Up on the American Crime Network all the time and it really gives insight into why people commit crimes. For many people, it's drugs or gangs. According to the Office of Addiction Services and Support, 2.8 million people in New York State aged 12 and older had a substance use disorder in the past year.

Recidivism, where people who are arrested and serve time in jail or prison return after they are freed, is certainly a problem. The Community Service Society says of the 25,000 inmates New York State releases each year, more than half will return to prison within three years of their release. That statistic is one of the worst in the United States.

Hopefully, New York State and our communities can find solutions to help people who get arrested, especially if it is for a non-violent crime. One thing I have learned from watching lots of shows about prisons and prisoners is that a small-time criminal can learn a lot while incarcerated and become a big-time criminal!
