Another State Legislator is being asked to resign, this time for homophobic comments.

According to New10, Albany County Legislator George E Langdon IV made some inappropriate, homophobic comments about members of the LGBTQ community.

Representative Langdon allegedly made comments over the weekend that landed him in some hot water. A recording has surfaced of representative Langdon speaking at an event called “A Return to Liberty Under the Constitution“.

He was attempting to make a point that most things in nature can sustain themselves and go on infinitely because it is the nature of things. He said heterosexual relationships could go on and on because they are perpetual.

In comparison, he said that homosexual relationships cannot last and would become basically extinct after a 40 year period. He allegedly said, “When you have homosexual relationships, it’s not perpetual. Give them an island, they’ll be gone after 40 years.

In an apology, George Langdon said, “I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community and all others for the hurtful remarks recently made at a conference. I have never been homophobic nor do I think any individuals should be placed on an island. I deeply regret my foolish off-the-cuff comment that has caused so much pain. I commit to doing a better job of respecting diversity.“

Although Mr. Langdon has issued an apology, some members of the legislature are not moved to forgiveness. Andrew Joyce, Chairman of the Albany County Legislator, says that an apology is not enough. He said that Langdon cannot properly represent his district in light of the controversial comments. Mr. Joyce says that the legislature does not have the authority to force Mr. Langdon out of office. He says that Langdon should just resign. A resolution has been drafted and it is pending until a vote at the next legislative meeting on April 12.

I wonder how many “off-the-cuff” comments elected officials can make before they are held accountable and forced to suffer the consequences of their words and deeds.
