Akon Hit With $150 Million Lawsuit by Former Business Partner
Akon might be making a positive difference globally, but the "Lonely" hitmaker is reportedly being sued by his longtime business partner, Devyne Stephens, who claims that he owes him over $150 million in unpaid fees from their work together in the music business.
According to TMZ, Stephens helped Akon launch his Konvict Music record label, and was the executive that assisted in kickstarting Akon's career. Court documents filed by Stephens say that he is supposed to receive 40 percent of everything that Akon has earned since 2006, which includes record sales, touring rights, royalties and more. The outlet states that the partners had a dispute over the contract years ago, but the issue was reportedly settled in 2015. Since then, Stephens claims that he still has not seen a penny of the money owed to him.
Because Stephens is suing Akon for $150 million, that would mean that Akon earned around $400 million over the last decade. So far, Akon has not commented on the lawsuit. For now, he has a lot of other ventures on his hands, including providing electricity to 80 million Africans with his solar power initiative.
