Results For 2025 Local Elections In Western New York
The 2025 election cycle has finally ended now that voting day has come and gone. Now, the people who won and lost on Election Day get ready to prepare for the future, while people who are looking to run for office next year start to prepare America to be ready to do it all over again.
While the 2026 election next year will focus again on national elections for Congress, and some other state offices, the state, county, and local municipal politicians who now find they have new jobs to work are starting to get ready now.
Election Day 2025 was Tuesday, November 4th, and the Empire State polls were open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. During the 15 hours that people could vote, plus the nine days available for early voting, less than 185,000 votes were cast in Erie County, along with less than 40,000 votes being cast in Niagara County; the unofficial results are now available.
What Offices Were Being Elected This Year?
2024 was a Presidential election year, which means turnout was relatively high. That is not the case this year, as there were only local, county, and some state issues on the ballot. When we have local elections only, voter turnout is generally low, which is exactly what happened in Western New York. Turnout in Niagara County sits around 25%, while it's about 28% in Erie County.
The Unofficial Results Are In
The unofficial results show several races were decided on election night:
- Amendment To The New York State Constitution: to Allow Olympic Sports Complex in Essex County on State Forest Preserve Land.
- Unofficially, 4,209,181 votes were cast, and about than 45% of those votes approved the ballot measure. If this stands, then the New York State Constitution will be amended.
- Mayor of The City of Buffalo: There was a three-way race to become the first new mayor in Buffalo in nearly 20 years, with Sean M. Ryan, James R. Gardner, and Michael Gainer facing off against each other.
- Sean Ryan is projected to have won this race, having unofficially earned more than 71% of the vote.
- Mayor of the City of North Tonawanda: Austin J. Tylec faced off against Thomas E. Krantz, with Tylec unofficially winning this race with more than 67% of the vote.
- Supervisor of the Town of Amherst: Shawn A. Lavin and Dan R. Gagliardo battled in a hotly contested race for control of Erie County's largest town, with Lavin unofficially earning more than 53% of the vote.
