A career in the broadcast field can be fun and exciting, but it also is a lot of hard work. Thousands of people work to support broadcasting around the nation, from radio to TV; it's a career that's not for the faint of heart.

When young people are interested in the field, one way to find out if they want to enter the field is to meet with broadcast professionals and maybe even tour a broadcast facility. This happened on Friday, April 26, 2024, when a group of students from Tapestry Charter High School in Buffalo spent the day at Townsquare Media of Buffalo's offices and broadcast facilities, home of Power 93.7 WBLK.

The students, who are taking part in the school's art and music intensive learning program, spent a few days in the community visiting different spaces connected to the arts and music scenes in Buffalo. Part of those travels brought them to WBLK to engage in a crash course on radio broadcasting.

From the discovery of radio ways in the 1800s and the development of commercial radio to the founding of WBLK FM in Buffalo and the impact this radio station has had all over Buffalo and the world.

After introducing radio and its history, the students took a tour of the Townsquare facilities, including the studios of 92.9 WBUF, The New 96.1 WTSS, Country 106.5 WYRK, and WBLK. The young adults also toured the station's transmitter and all of the other technical facilities and participated in a few radio breaks on air.

The day wrapped up with lunch and then a roundtable discussion about the music business, which included other industry professionals. Some of the special guests included Lisha B from WNWZ-AM and WALJ-FM and music executive Jennifer Norwood.

Overall, the students said they learned a lot about radio and broadcasting; a few said they thought they may pursue a radio career.
