Mixing the "radio-worthy weirdness" of rappers like Waka Flocka Flame with the "hooky underground anthem sound of artists" like Chief Keef, Young Thug, born Jeffrey Williams, broke came onto the scene in 2013.

Thug released three volumes of his mixtape series I Came from Nothing before joining Gucci Mane's 1017 Brick Squad crew in 2012. Thug released his mixtape, 1017 Thug, in 2013. The release featured the performer's single "Picacho". Thug's single "Stoner"  was released the same year.

In 2014 an authorized remix featuring Wale led to a series of unauthorized remixes from artists like Jim Jones, Iamsu! and Trick Trick.
