As we start seeing more winter weather, slippery roads, and less visibility, it is so important that you know the proper steps to take if you've been in a car accident.

That's why I decided to talk to Rich Barnes, president of The Barnes Firm, which is one of the largest injury law firms in America. It also happens to be located right here in our hometown of Buffalo!

One of the things I wanted to ask Rich about the most was what people should do in the event they get into a car accident:

Make an assessment if someone is injured, whether it's the driver, passengers, etc., but sometimes that's not readily discernible. Injuries often do not pop up until a few days after the accident has occurred. You should also be proactive in figuring out what happened. Sometimes it's clear, sometimes it isn't. But take pictures of the vehicles, the location, any damage, and make sure you're exchanging insurance information with the other driver.

Rich also stressed to me the importance of contacting law enforcement whether you think the accident is serious or not:

Get the police there and let our law enforcement folks do their jobs. It's important, especially with your insurance carrier, to have an assessment done by the police. We often run into these "he said, she said" type situations about who caused the accident. Having the police prepare a report is helpful particularly to us at The Barnes Firm because having a law enforcement assessment of what happened will better help us help our client.
