WNY Woman Dies After Tragically Falling From Moving Car On I-90
A Western New York Woman has lost her life after an incident on I-90. According to the New York State Police, the tragic incident happened on September 18, 2023, at approximately 8:15 pm. The accident happened on the I-90 east bound near the I-290 interchange in the town of Amherst.
Troopers out of State Police Buffalo responded to the scene. The woman, 32 year old Gabriel J. Turner, of Snyder, fell out of a moving vehicle. She was found dead on the shoulder of Interstate 90. She was riding as was a passenger in a 2011 Ford F550 tow truck. State Troopers say she exited the truck from the passenger side while it was in motion. A 34-year-old male from Buffalo was driving the vehicle. Turner's body was taken to Erie County Medical Center for an autopsy. Police are still investigating the incident. Are New York State Roads Deadly?
Surprisingly, the answer is no. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2021, New York State had 1,099 fatal accidents with 1,157. That's a rate of 5.8 per 100,000 people. For comparison, the other most populated states have much higher rates. California has a rate of 10.9 per 100,000, Florida has a rate of 17.1, and Texas has a rate of 15.2 per 100,000.
The majority of fatalities, 59 percent, happened in single vehicle crashes in New York State. Multi-vehicle crashes accounted for 41 percent of fatalities.
