Massive Car Crash Shuts Down New York State Thruway

Winter has really been having its way with Western and Central New York this year. Just in 4 short weeks in January, the Empire State has had all sorts of weather-related issues from Buffalo to Utica and just about everywhere in between.

According to the National Weather Service, Syracuse has already over 100 inches of snow this season, while Rochester and Buffalo both have eclipsed 70 inches. When you start measuring snowfall in feet, you begin to have all sorts of issues in and around the region.

You most often see those issues pop up on the road, and that's exactly what's happened along the New York State Thruway, as a massive winter weather-related crash has caused several cars to pile up.

The crash, which involved as many as 30 cars, happened on the Westbound lanes of the New York State Thruway near Batavia, New York.

The last few hours have seen the Thruway closed between exits 48 (Batavia) and 48a (Pembroke). According to Buffalo Toronto Public Media, troopers from the New York State Police expect the Thruway to be closed for several hours as road crews need to clear the highway of snow and ice before they can begin removing cars from the roads.

While this is a massive pileup, only minor injuries have been reported, which is a good thing considering how bad it could have been. People who need to head westbound on the highway are advised to find another way because the road is currently impassible.
