The Elephants Are Leaving The Buffalo Zoo
In a statement released from the Buffalo Zoo that you can find on WKBW, the elephants Jothi and Surapa, are leaving the Zoo!
The elephants are in their mid-30s and will be shipped off to The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. This move really is what's best for the elephants, as Jonathan Dandes, Chairman of the Zoo’s Board of Directors said in his statement:
This decision demonstrates that the Buffalo Zoo will always do what is best and right for all of the animals in our care. Using our soon-to-be-released strategic plan that includes the introduction of new exhibits, together we are forging a bold future for the Buffalo Zoo.
It's a movement in which a few zoos have already adapted, shipping the elephants to better, more equipped exhibits--after all, that's what's most important. We don't know if these elephants will be replaced by other elephants at this time but it seems unlikely.
Per WKBW, claims have been made that Buffalo is one of the worst zoos in the country for elephants, so you can see why a change was made.
