Run-DMC is finally getting their Grammy recognition. With over 30 years in the rap game, they have never receive a Grammy trophy. But, this year, Run, DMC and the late Jam Master Jay will be the first hip-hop act to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy.

The iconic group did gain a nomination in 1987 for Best R&B Vocal Performance with their 1986 album Raising Hell before the hip-hop category was introduced in 1989 -- but ultimately lost to Prince and the Revolution's "Kiss." The rap trio were also the first hip-hop group to be nominated for a Grammy as well.

"I’m so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy!" tweeted Rev Run. "I just got a call from the Grammys!! They shocked me!! We're the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful!. God is good!!! I’m so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy!"

The hip-hop pioneers will be honored alongside Earth, Wind & Fire, Jefferson Airplane, Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Herbie Hancock and Linda Ronstadt. According to the Grammy Award's website, the award is for musicians “who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.”

“Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees,” read a statement from Academy president Neil Portnow. “Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”

The 58th annual Grammy Awards will air live from Los Angeles on CBS on Feb. 15 at 8PM ET. See the full list of nominees here.
