Tragedy has struck multiple police agencies in New York State. In a high-stress job like policing, there are bound to be casualties, but seven in five months seems like an anomaly. However, you may be shocked to find out that it's not. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which aims to diminish the stigmas associated with mental health.

Mental Health Awareness Month runs from Thursday, May 1, to Saturday, May 31, 2025. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI, "Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a driving force in addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions."

On Monday, May 5, 2025, a former New York City Police Department officer allegedly killed themself. According to Suggest.com, this death is the seventh death by suicide involving police officers in New York since the beginning of 2025. A body was discovered in Nassau County on Hempstead Beach, according to the NY Post. A source said the male victim was a former New York City police officer who fatally shot himself with a handgun.

In 2024, there were 13 police officers in New York State who died by suicide. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said on social media, “The suicide rate among law enforcement is 60% higher than the average population."

19 Of New York State's Most Wanted Criminals- April 2025

Below are individuals wanted by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision's (DOCCS) Office of Special Investigations who have been designated as its Most Wanted Fugitives. They should be considered armed and dangerous. This list is current as of 4/02/2025:
