Oh Canada! WNYers May Be Allowed to Travel Across the Border in August
Who's ready to get back to being able to travel to Canada? I know I am! Western New Yorkers may be able to travel across the border for non-essential activities very soon. We have been patiently waiting for the green light to see our Canadian friends and now it looks like we may be able to in about a month.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that fully vaccinated WNYers could begin to visit the country as soon as mid-August, according to WIVB. The U.S.-Canada border has been closed to most Americans since March 21, 2020, according to VOA News. If the border does in fact reopen in Mid-August, it will have been closed for a record 17-months.
Canadians Are Getting Vaccinated
According to NPR, Canadians are getting their vaccinations,
Three-quarters of eligible Canadians have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, a higher percentage than in the U.S., and more than 40% are fully vaccinated.
I miss being able to go to Toronto, which always reminds me of New York, Chicago and strangely enough, Miami. And of course, the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is a nice change of pace. I can only imagine how much money has been lost when it comes to tourism. We have lots of Canadian fam that listen to WBLK. They say they miss coming to Buffalo for the food, entertainment, and shopping. We have had some great shows and concerts in Buffalo, so people in Southern Ontario often made the trip to check them out. Hopefully, this won't be another announcement that leaves us with false hope...we've heard 'the border may reopen soon' many times since the COVID-19 vaccines were released.
