For many years, earning a Regents Diploma from a New York State high school came with a large amount of prestige and honor due to the rigorous work it took to earn it. However, those days are long gone for many, and the State University of New York system and the New York State Department of Education have decided to make changes that better reflect today's educational landscape.

Just over a year ago, plans were announced to phase out Regents Exams as a requirement for students across the Empire State, according to New York's Portrait of a Graduate. Those changes are now set in stone to take effect starting with the 2027-28 school year.

The state's full report details the changes, along with the state's change timeline. However, there are some key facts that you need to know. 

  • Regents Exams haven't been totally eliminated; they're just being refreshed and refocused.
  • There will now only be 1 New York State public high school diploma. Until now, the general diploma and Regents diploma were separate.
  • The number of credits needed to graduate is being redefined.
