If there is one thing that is synonymous with Buffalo and Western New York, it has to be snow.

Whether we like it or not, we have a reputation here in upstate New York for getting a lot of snow, and knowing what to do with it when it falls on the ground.

If we're honest about it, that reputation is well earned. Buffalo did win the latest Golden Snowball competition. In fact, we got so much snow last year, that Buffalo also won the Golden Snowglobe award for the most snow in the United States.

With all of that snow, it is inevitable that so much snow will fall that we may need to have a snow day.

I don't know about you, but I remember snow days when I was in school as some of the best days of my life. Having a free day off of school to do nothing but frolic in the joy of winter is one of the greatest things that can happen in a kid's life.

However, one New York school district has taken steps to ensure no kid ever experiences that joy again.

During a TV interview on Fox 5 in New York City, NYC Public School Chancellor David Banks announced that NYC Public Schools are doing away with snow days effective immediately.

Now when bad weather hits New York City, the more than 1 million students in the Big Apple will be expected to participate in Remote Learning. In fact, now anytime school buildings in NYC are closed due to an emergency, students will shift to remote learning.

So, sorry, kids! No more snow days, but it’s gonna be good for you!
-David Banks, Chancellor of the New York City Public Schools

The Chancellor stated since students need to attend school at least 180 days per year, this will make it easier for NYC officials to ensure that students meet this requirement.

What About Other Communities?

Since New York City is a leader in many facets of New York State life, it's not a far stretch to think that other communities in New York will follow right behind them.
