New York State Police Is Hiring, But Time Is Running Out

The New York State Trooper Entrance Exam Deadline Is Approaching
The first step in securing a job as a Trooper with the New York State Police is taking the entrance exam. The exam has been open since October 23, 2023, and will be closing on March 4, 2024. The requirements to be eligible for a Trooper job are:
- Be a citizen of the United States on February 19, 2024
- Never been convicted of a felony
- Be at least 20 years old on February 19, 2024
- Be younger than 35 years old before February 19, 2024, OR be 35 years or older on February 19, 2024, but have federal active duty military service and qualify for a maximum age extension
- Never been dishonorably discharged from military service
If you do not meet all of the requirements above, you will not be allowed to the the exam. In addition to meeting all of the requirements, applicants must pay a $20 application fee.
How Much Does A New York State Trooper Make?
According to ZipRecruiter, as of February 11, 2024, the average annual pay for a New York State Trooper is $71,299 a year.
Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $34.28 an hour. This is the equivalent of $1,371/week or $5,941/month.
According to the NYSP website, as of April 1, 2022, the starting salary for training and a Trooper's first year is $59,612. After one year the salary increases to $84,331 and after 5 years Troopers make $100,281.
Salaries do not include: Longevity compensation; hazardous duty compensation; expanded duty pay or additional location compensation for New York City and the following counties: Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester.
