Major Downtown Intersection Closing For Construction In Buffalo
As summer has shifted to fall, construction season in Western New York is finally starting to wind down. However, even as the cooler temps begin to arrive in the 716, several projects will continue for a while.
One of those projects has been making big news around the nation as the Buffalo Bills are grinding to build their new home in Orchard Park. Another project that has been in the works for a while is slowly and steadily changing the face of downtown Buffalo.
The city of Buffalo and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority have been in the multi-year process of returning cars to Main Street. This project has injected major energy into downtown as more traffic traverses the streets. Having cars share the road with the Metro Rail just makes sense for Buffalo.

The latest leg of this project is rehabbing Main Street between Mohawk and Church Street, which has caused the Metro Rail to run on a single track for a while this year. One of the major intersections will also be closed for a few weeks in October and November.
The corner of Main Street and Court Street, which is home to the Hilton Garden Inn, the Liberty Building, the Rand Building, and one side of Lafayette Square, is set to be closed to traffic from Monday, October 28, 2024, to Friday, November 8, 2024.
In addition to closing the intersection, above-ground rail service will also be shut down from Sunday, October 27th, through Saturday, November 23rd. The NFTA is making shuttle buses available for people needing to travel between the Allen Street Rail Station and the Canalside Station.
