John Singleton Claims ‘All Eyez On Me’ Movie Rights Were Stolen From Afeni Shakur

The Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me may have been a surprise hit at the box office but there is still controversy surrounding the movie. After being slammed by a number of celebrities including Jada Pinkett Smith and 50 Cent, the film's former director, John Singleton, is calling out the filmmakers once again.

Appearing as a guest on N.O.R.E.’s Drink Champs podcast, Singleton, who was previously attached to direct All Eyez On Me, alleged that the film rights were stolen from Pac’s mother, Afeni Shakur.

“They stole the rights from his mother," he said. "They made the movie they wanted to make, and hopefully one day I’ll get a chance to tell that story.”

In a 2014 interview with AllHipHop, All Eyez On Me producer L.T. Hutton said Afeni was involved with the film.

“She has a huge role,” he said at the time. “She has approval of a lot of things, and she wants the best portrayal of her son possible. She doesn’t have a problem with any of the truth. She just wants to make sure that everything was told correctly.”

Elsewhere in his Drink Champs interview, Singleton was asked about rumors that he wanted to include a scene that featured Shakur being sexually assaulted. “There’s a whole lot of things that they would not have in the movie that actually happened,” he said.

When pressed to reveal if Tupac was really sexually assaulted, Singleton said, “There’s a whole lot of things that happened. There’s stuff [about] who actually was involved in his death and the lead up to his death.”
