The Polar Vortex has been pretty flat meaning that the cool air we normally get in September and into October hasn't been there.


WHAT IS THE POLAR VORTEX?

The Polar Vortex is a massive area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds both of the Earth’s poles. It always exists near the Earth's poles but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter over the rest of the Earth.

HOW DOES THE POLAR VORTEX IMPACT WEATHER IN NEW YORK?

When the cold air shifts down and the Polar Vortex moves south of the North Pole it can bring some very cold temperatures and snowy conditions to New York.

HOW WILL THE POLAR VORTEX IMPACT NEW YORK STATE IN 2024/2025?

Early signs are showing that the Polar Vortex is weak which means it will bring a less chance of very cold air moving into New York State. If it stays the same it could mean a warmer and milder than normal winter.
