The long Fourth of July weekend is upon us and besides seeing a lot more fireworks this weekend you will see a lot more New York State troopers on the roads.

The New York State Police announced that they kicked off their annual Fourth of July "Stop DWI" campaign on Friday and will have beefed up patrol right through July 4th.

The state police will have more DWI checkpoints, more patrol cars, both marked and unmarked, on the road, and more officers available to prevent drinking and driving.

Besides upping up their DWI checkpoints and patrols, the New York State Police will also be on the lookout for drivers who are texting or using electronic devices while driving over the weekend.

Both the New York State Troopers and members of the New York State Governor's Traffic Committee remind people to have a plan if you are going to drink during the long holiday weekend.

The best way to avoid drinking and driving is to not drink, but if you are you should have a designated driver, use a ride-share service like Uber or Lyft, or make sure to have a plan to get you home safely.
