There are just a few days left for those who love to hunt to find success as the final days of the season are here in New York State. The weather forecast is calling for warmer than normal temperatures and any snow we have left should be melting. Not the conditions were are used to for late season hunting.

Hunting is a great tradition here in New York State that not only is great for conservation and preservation of various animals and wildlife, it is a great way for families to save money and hunt for their food rather than pay high prices.

But as quick as it started, the small game season is getting ready to close for most of New York State at the end of this month.

Most of the small game seasons, including pheasant, cottontail rabbit and squirrel, will end on February 29th.

If you are planning to hunt, keep in mind these basic rules:

-You may not use a rifle or handgun to hunt pheasant or migratory game birds.

-Air guns may be used to hunt squirrels, rabbits, hares, ruffed grouse, and furbearers that may be hunted (e.g., raccoons and coyotes) and unprotected species.

-A bow or crossbow may be used to hunt small game.

As far as what we have to look forward to, turkey season is not that far away! The opening day for most turkey hunting takes place in May. However, there is a special youth season for the younger hunters. The 2024 Youth Turkey Season is happening April 20 and 21.
