What Is The Lyrid Meteor Shower?
This is one of the oldest known meteor showers and has been active for over 2500 years. The meteor shower happens when the Earth passes through debris left by Comet Thatcher. As the particles enter Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up and create glowing streaks of light known as meteors.
This is the second major space event to impact the skies over New York State over the past couple of weeks. The other was the Comet C/2025 R3 (Pan-STARRS). It passed over the skies of New York State last week. The comet was just discovered by scientists last year and put on a show for those who had clear skies at night.
