For some current and former SUNY Brockport students, this news is a heartbreaker.

One of the staples of college life is gearing up to head out with your friends for a late night out. It usually starts at someone’s room or apartment house, then venturing to a party or one of the local bar spots.

Eventually, hunger would take over, and it was time to saunter (or, okay, stumble) towards home, stopping to grab some late-night eats along the way.

Post-party food usually consisted of a garbage plate or something equally greasy and delicious (stuff we probably couldn’t get away with post-graduation thanks to our slowly disintegrating metabolism).

For years in the town of  Brockport, there was one spot that college students and locals could always count on to get their plate fix on the weekends - but sadly, not for long.

Jimmy Z’s Closing In Brockport, New York

It’s a sad day for regulars of Jimmy Z’s Plates & Shakes.

The popular restaurant located on Main Street in Brockport announced on social media that they’ll be shutting their doors for good on Thursday, February 29th. They also let patrons know that their food truck and catering service is ending this September.

“It has been an absolute privilege to serve you, we can’t thank you enough for embracing us and making Jimmy Z’s a success!” - Jimmy Z’s Plates & Shakes

Jimmy Z’s has been open since 2003, and has served thousands of SUNY Brockport students for decades. So, naturally, Brockport alum and local fans were shocked and saddened by the news.

Some commented that Brockport wouldn’t be the same without the popular local eatery.

Others shared their fond memories about their go-to place for plates.

But there’s good news for those who just can’t picture life without Jimmy Z’s amazing meat sauce. It looks like a jarred version is in the works.

Yes, I know there are tons of places here in Western New York to grab a great garbage plate (my go-to is white hot, home fries, mac salad and lots of meat sauce). But as a SUNY Brockport alum, I can’t help but get nostalgic about the many meals I’ve had at Jimmy Z’s while I was going to school there.

It’s where I took my dad to have his first (and so far, only) plate, and where my friends and classmates often met up after a late night to catch up on our weekend adventures.

Jimmy Z’s will be missed.
