When NFL players make an illegal play on the field, it's not just a flag and a loss of yards for them.  They actually take it out of their paychecks too.

Does it feel like there are constantly flags flying when you're watching NFL games these days?  There might be a couple reasons for that.  The first would be that the rules are completely out of control.  You can't have a perfect rule to fit every single situation, but they have a ton of them in line.  Mostly the rules are there to keep the players safe, but there are a bunch that are just outrageous (see the fines for celebrations and many times for taunting).

The other reason you might be seeing a lot of flags is that the NFL makes money when dangerous plays happen. It's not uncommon for a player to be fined thousands of dollars for a hit or a play that could put another player in jeopardy.

What kinds of penalties draw fines in the NFL?

Players don't often face fines if they commit a penalty like holding or false starts.  But penalties that either make the game look bad (fighting, taunting, celebrations) or put other players in danger (leading with the helmet, a hit on a defenseless receiver, roughing the quarterback) can end up costing a lot.

The full list includes:

  • Striking/Kicking/Kneeing
  • Horsecollar Tackle
  • Facemask
  • Late Hit
  • Impermissible Use of the Helmet
  • Hit on Defenseless Player
  • Blindside Block
  • Roughing the Passer
  • Low Block
  • Fighting
  • Unsportsmanlike Conduct
  • Taunting
  • Uniform/Equipment Violations
  • Helmet-to-Helmet Hit
  • Celebration
  • Peelback Block
  • Tripping

Earlier this week we saw that the Buffalo Bills are near the top of the league when it comes to fines for fights over the last 10 years.  But what about the other fines that they face?

How many Buffalo Bills have been fined already in 2023?

According to data by Spotrac, the Buffalo Bills have been fined 14 times with 10 players committing the fouls.  The player who has been fined the most is Ed Oliver.  He has been fined 5 times on his own.  His infractions include Impermissible Use of Helmet, Unsportsmanlike Conduct (3 times), and Roughing The Passer. So far he's racked up $79,223 in fines.
