What Is The Record For The Coldest Temperature In Buffalo, NY?
This morning was one of the coldest mornings on record in Western New York in quite some time, but was it the coldest it's ever been here?
Western New York saw its coldest temperature in nearly 10 years
This cold snap has not been a joke. The entire country is getting a taste of it, but here in Buffalo, we're seeing temperatures we haven't seen in decades. This morning we hit -9 degrees at the Buffalo airport. That's the coldest it's been since Valentine's Day of 2016 when we hit -12.
The worst part is that the number we saw on the thermometer doesn't even count in the wind chill. When the wind gets going, it feels even colder.
Is this the coldest it's ever been in Western New York?
With temperatures this low, it makes a lot of people wonder how much worse it could get. Could it actually get colder here?
The answer is yes. Not only could it get colder, but according to the National Weather Service, it already has in the past. Now, keep in mind, these are just the records from the time when they started recording temperatures, but back in the 30's, Buffalo saw a low of -20 (February 9th, 1934), and then it happened again on Februrary 2, 1961.
This seems to be the week when we get hit with those arctic temperatures.
Most people can tell the difference with heat. When it's 90, you can tell that it's that much warmer than when it's 70. But I'm not even sure if you can really tell a difference between -9 and -20. Once it gets that cold, it just all feels cold.
