When free agency begins in the NFL, it goes very quickly. The legal tampering period starts, and before you know it dozens of players have new teams. The Bills have already lost a handful of players, but there are still a bunch available for them to re-sign if they want.

In-Demand Players Get Scooped Up Quickly

Normally, a handful of players who were allowed to explore free agency will get scooped up. Whether it's the media buzz around them, or the fact that they're a perfect fit for a team, some players don't have to play the market for too long. They'll get a massive contract or take a hometown discount for the team they want to play for.

There are a variety of reasons why a player might be in free agency for a while

While some players go pretty quickly, others will remain as free agents for a longer period of time, and for a ton of reasons.

The player is waiting on the perfect deal

Sure, some players end up having ridiculously long careers in the NFL. When you think about how long Tom Brady played quarterback well into his 40's, it's hard to believe that the average NFL career only lasts around 3-5 years. It's not long. So when you have a chance to make a splash and get paid, you don't want to settle. It makes sense to make as much money as you can while you're there.

They're getting older

Some teams don't want to take a chance on an older player. While they've got experience under their belt, it's a fact that most players slow down as they get older (we all do). Not only do younger players normally cost less, but they're often at the peak of their athleticism.

They've got a history of injuries

The best ability is availability. Players who are injured a lot or have a history of having severe injuries create a risk for the teams that sign them. If a team pays someone big money, they want to make sure they're not going to be giving it to a player who is sitting on the bench.

There are a lot of reasons why some players take awhile to get signed in free agency. Here are the ones from the Buffalo Bills who are still waiting on a new contract to continue their NFL careers.
