There was some big news on Monday, as New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the New York State Fair would make its return this summer, after being canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement was very much welcomed by New York residents, as people are eager to get back to fairs, festivals, sporting events, and concerts.

However, after the announcement was made, many here in Western New York were wondering about the Erie County Fair, and would imply that fair would happen as well?

Erie County Fair CEO and Director Jessica Underberg said on Monday afternoon that they want to have a fair but as of now, they have not had any guidance from the state.

Underberg says she's not sure if today's announcement goes for county fairs and that they would hope to hear guidance by week's end, according to WIVB.

If the Erie County Fair does happen this year, like the New York State Fair will be this August, it's feasible to think the guidelines put in place for the state fair would be at least similar to county fairs, like Erie County's. Here's what that would look like.

New York Upstate is reporting that crowds would be limited to 50 percent at the state fair and that the fairgrounds would track the total number of people entering the fair at any given time. Those numbers could change in the coming weeks, based on COVID-19 rates.

People would be likely required to wear a mask when at the state fair, per Governor Cuomo.

The biggest takeaway from Cuomo on Monday, in regards to the New York State Fair, was the implementation of "zoned areas."

Basically, dividing the fair into four separate areas to better control crowds; those areas are food and drink, music, agriculture, and rides/attractions.

Essentially, people would likely have to get a ticket for each individual area. If that's the case, it would be a big change and we'll see if the Erie County Fair goes that route, assuming the fair will be held this August.

Finally, buildings at the state fair will be closed, except for bathrooms. It would focus on the outdoors, which is best against the COVID-19 virus.

Again, as of now, the Erie County Fair has not had any announcement for 2021 and they hope to get guidance soon, but there will for sure be restrictions and guidelines that will be implemented if it does happen. It probably won't be the exact same Erie County Fair we're used to.

However, I think this speaks for a lot of Buffalonians, we just want the fair back this year.
