Expect nightly lane closures on parts of the I-290 beginning on Monday, March 7.

These lane closures will happen in Tonawanda and Amherst. The closed sections of I-290 begin at Colvin Boulevard to I-90; however, the closures vary from the eastbound to the westbound sides (depending on the night).

The closures will occur every night (starting on March 7) at 7 p.m. and the road will not open itself back up until 6 a.m.

Why are they closing I-290?

The working crews need to enact these lane closures so the crews can install new guardrails.

How effective are guardrails?

According to the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), guardrails can help prevent fatalities and minimize injuries that could result from a crash that occurs on a busy road such as I-290. Roadway departure crashes, as they call them, account for more than 50% of all motor vehicles traffic fatalities.

When installed correctly, guardrails can “reduce fatalities and serious-injuries caused by roadway departure crashes by 16 to 47 percent.” They reduce cross-median crashes with a 52 percent reduction in all fatal crashes and a 61 percent reduction in all serious-injury crashes.

When Will I-290 Continue With Regular Traffic Flow?

It is difficult to know at this time how long the guardrail installments will take, but we will update you at this link as soon as we know when the I-290 opens nightly once again.
