The Governor announced that Lancaster has the highest infection rate in all of New York State, at 9.17 percent.

Here are the seven towns with the highest COVID-19 infection rates in Western New York as of Sunday, according to WGRZ.

  • Lancaster: 9.17 percent
  • Hamburg: 8.70 percent
  • West Seneca: 8.30 percent
  • Cheektowaga: 8.25 percent
  • Orchard Park: 6.95 percent
  • Tonawanda: 6.80 percent
  • Williamsville: 5.73 percent

Cuomo said that because of the time of year (Thanksgiving to New Year's), he believes the rates will continue to go up.

"There are more parties, people are shopping, students are coming home from college in states with higher infection rates, there are more family gatherings," Cuomo said. "Thirty-seven days between today and January 2 of significantly increased social activity."

It remains to be seen if Western New York will stay in an orange zone this upcoming week or if the region will be designated to a red zone. That announcement should come on Wednesday from the Governor's Office.
