Hey, it's Yasmin Young and I'm teaming up with Hennessy to highlight black-owned businesses right here in Buffalo and Western New York as part of the Hennessy Sable Series.

For the second edition, I talked to Steve, owner of Ike and BGs Restaurant. His restaurant is so beloved in the community and people go absolutely crazy trying to win gift certificates for it during Free Food Fridays on WBLK.

Check out some of the conversation I had with Steve below:

Give us a little bit of background about the restaurant and how you ended up taking it over.

My dad is the founder of it and he started it back in 1998. I took over about three and a half years ago and have been running it on my own ever since. I'm going to try to keep it going and keep the quality and good food alive.

Was your dad's name Ike or BG?

His name was Ike and his wife is BG.

Tell us about what you offer on your menu.

It's a soul food take-out restaurant. BBQ ribs and chicken, fried chicken and shrimp, all your favorite sides to go with it like mac and cheese, collard greens, cabbage, potato salad, baked beans. It's all the fixtures that we love and were brought up on.

Give a little info about where you're located and what your hours are.

We're located at 1646 Genesee Street and are open every day from 12 to 10 p.m. and Sundays 12 to 7 p.m. It's take-out only at the moment, but we're planning to expand it soon. The phone number is (716) 892-4301.

Do you also have a website?

Yes, we do. ikeandbgsrestaurant.com is where people can order online and everything.
