As we continue to move forward during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen many changes in New York State and here in Western New York, in regards to capacity limits and other restrictions.

Governor Andrew Cuomo today, at his press conference, announced many changes to capacity limits within New York State; which includes Western New York,

According to Chris Horvatits of WIVB here in Buffalo, Cuomo announced that there can be increases to capacity limits for many businesses in the state, along with offices.

  • Outdoor stadiums can increase from 20 percent to 33 percent capacity.
  • Offices can increase from 50 percent to 75 percent capacity.
  • Casinos can increase from 25 percent to 50 percent.
  • Gyms (outside of New York City) can increase from 33 percent to 50 percent.

However, these capacity limit changes do not go into effect until May 15th. May 19th will be the start date for outdoor spectator venues, which will be live shows and sporting events.

The Toronto Blue Jays will be playing in Buffalo at Sahlen Field by June, and if you're wondering what 33 percent capacity would look like inside the ballpark for the Major League Blue Jays in Buffalo, it'll be just under 5,500 people.

This is great news for businesses and sporting venues -- along with concert venues, and we're starving for live music to get back as soon as possible.

It's been so long since we've enjoyed an outdoor sporting event or live concert here in Western New York. We're going in the right direction.
