FLOTUS Making It Easy To Spot Good-For-You Foods [VIDEO]
In celebration of the fourth anniversary of her Let's Move campaign, Michelle Obama is pushing back against powerful lobby firms who load our foods with added sugar and bury the calorie count. Details and her hilarious cameo on the 'Tonight Show' inside.
First lady Michelle Obama announced sweeping changes to the "Nutrition Facts" label on most packaged foods on Thursday, marking a major victory against some of the most powerful lobbies in Washington: the sugar farming, refining and processed food industries.
Under the FDA's new proposal, the "serving size" of many products would be increased to more accurately reflect a typical serving, and a new line would be added to the label listing "added sugars." The rules would also make the labels easier to read by increasing the type size of the calorie content and the sugar content.
“Our guiding principle here is very simple: that you as a parent and a consumer should be able to walk into your local grocery store, pick up an item off the shelf, and be able to tell whether it’s good for your family,” said Michele Obama.
