16,000 Cases of COVID-19 Last Week, Here Are Top 7 Erie County Zip Codes

The Erie County Department of Health is reporting that COVID-19 cases have decreased in Erie County.  Positive cases were down for the week ending January 15, 2022, from the previous week by 16 percent.  The City of Buffalo had 35 percent of all of the cases for the week in the county.  The weekly positivity rate was 23.5 percent.  The age group with the highest number of COVID-19 cases from January 9 through 15 was 20 to 29-years-old with 2895.

During the week, there were 16,103 new cases.  For the previous week ending January 8, there had been 19,318 cases.  These 7 zip codes had the most positive cases for the week:

Statewide, there were 168 deaths due to COVID-19 on Monday, January 17, according to Governo Hochul's daily report.   In Erie County there were 8 deaths, bringing the total to 2,354.  There were 684 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Western New York with 64 percent of them being admitted due to the virus or complications of it.  The 7-day average positivity rate in WNY is 20.28 percent.

The Governor is hopeful that this most recent surge of COVID-19 will end soon,

"We hope to close the books on this winter surge soon, so we can turn the page and open the book on our 2023 budget outlook and focus on the post pandemic future. As numbers continue to move in the right direction, we need to remain vigilant against the winter surge by getting the vaccine and boosters, continuing to use masks, and staying home if you feel sick, so we can keep our fellow New Yorkers safe. Let's not undo all of the progress we've made."
