Erie Co Health Commissioner Says COVID Booster Shots In The Works
Each day gives experts working on COVID Vaccines new insights on how the virus acts and replicates. As we learn more about the coronavirus, experts are realizing vaccines are not a “one and done” method to block the illness. It appears that means rolling up our sleeves for booster shots will be likely in the not too distant future.
Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein told WIVB-TV work is already underway on developing those booster shots.
She says scientists and vaccine makers will have their work cut out for them having to account for variants that even now are developing.
“Because the COVID-19 virus is an RNA virus, it replicates very very quickly and because it replicates very very quickly it’s also a sloppy replicator – so it makes a lot of mistakes. Sometimes the mistakes don’t help the virus. So they kind of fall out in the evolutionary process,” said Dr. Burstein.
Dr. Burstein did not say how soon, people would need those booster shots.

Moderna Inc Chief Medical Officer Tal Zaks said the company should be able to provide a booster shot for protection against variants of the coronavirus by the end of this year. Zaks, speaking to the Economic Club of New York, said he expects the booster shots the company is testing to show a higher level of protection against variants of the coronavirus.
