Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” Hits No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100
Drake's lengthy streak at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart has officially come to an end, as Childish Gambino has taken his spot. According to Billboard, the multi-talented rapper's latest single, "This Is America," debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart this week (May 14), becoming his first-ever chart-topping song.
Gambino was able to land the major feat of his first No. 1 record mostly due to the music video for the record going viral on social media following his Saturday Night Live performance last week (May 5). "This Is America" has become the most-streamed and top-selling song this week, hitting the top slot on the Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts.
According to Nielsen Music, the Awaken, My Love! entertainer reportedly garnered 65.3 million U.S. streams for the hit record, with 68 percent of those streams counting from the music video. "This Is America" also sold 78,000 downloads within the first five days of its release. Prior to this accomplishment, Gambino's highest mark on the Hot 100 chart came from "Redbone," which peaked at No. 12 last August.
The rapper, who is also known by his real name, Donald Glover, has now dethroned Drizzy, who previously held a 15-week streak of being at No. 1 for his "God's Plan" single, which was later dethroned by his latest single, "Nice For What." Both records hit the No. 1 slot during their debut weeks with "God's Plan" staying at the top for 11 weeks, while "Nice For What" remained at No. 1 for four weeks.
Congratulations to Childish Gambino on another huge accomplishment in his musical career.
